Overview
Landela is an early-stage technology company building and operating digital products and services. We are looking for Software Engineering Interns who want practical experience working in a real product engineering environment.
You will contribute to scoped features, fixes, tests, integrations, and engineering tasks with support from more experienced engineers. This is not a shadowing internship: you will write code that matters, receive feedback through code review and technical discussions, and learn how software moves from requirement to production.
Why this internship matters
We want interns to leave with a much stronger understanding of how professional software engineering actually works: reading an existing codebase, asking good questions, writing maintainable code, testing changes, responding to review feedback, debugging issues, and taking responsibility for completing scoped work.
Because Landela is a small team, interns will work close to real product development. In return, we expect curiosity, discipline, reliable follow-through, and a genuine willingness to learn.
What you will do
- Build and improve scoped product features, fixes, internal tools, and integrations with guidance from experienced engineers.
- Write and update automated tests and verify your changes before submitting them for review.
- Work with frontend, backend, APIs, databases, and other parts of the application depending on the task.
- Participate in pull-request reviews, respond to feedback, and learn how to improve code for clarity, maintainability, and reliability.
- Investigate bugs and technical issues with support from other engineers and learn how to debug problems systematically.
- Take part in planning, technical discussions, documentation, and the normal delivery process used by the engineering team.
- Learn how software is deployed and operated in production, while critical production changes remain under appropriate engineering supervision.
Requirements
Experience & qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- Foundational programming ability demonstrated through coursework, personal projects, open-source contributions, previous internships, freelance work, or other software you have built.
- Comfortable with at least one general-purpose programming language and able to understand basic concepts such as functions, data structures, APIs, databases, and version control.
- Some practical experience building web applications, APIs, or software projects beyond isolated classroom exercises is strongly preferred.
- Able to learn independently, communicate clearly, ask for help when blocked, and follow through on agreed tasks.
- Based in or near Nairobi and able to attend occasional in-person team sessions during the internship.
Nice to have
- Experience with JavaScript or TypeScript and a modern web framework such as React, Next.js, Node.js, or similar.
- Experience using Git, GitHub, relational databases, or working with external APIs.
- A GitHub profile, portfolio, deployed project, or other examples that show how you approach building software.

- You can complete increasingly complex scoped tasks with less guidance over time.
- Your code becomes clearer, better tested, and easier for other engineers to review and maintain.
- You respond constructively to feedback and apply lessons from previous reviews to future work.
- You communicate blockers early and ask focused questions rather than remaining stuck silently.
- You develop a practical understanding of how production software is designed, reviewed, tested, released, and supported.
- By the end of the internship, you can independently take a small, well-defined feature from requirement through implementation and review.

- Progress will be measured by learning, code quality, reliability, and increasing independence—not by how much code you produce.
Working style
Landela operates with a small engineering team and minimal layers. Interns are expected to communicate clearly, take feedback seriously, ask questions when needed, and take responsibility for completing agreed work.
The internship runs for six months and is remote-first for candidates based in Nairobi. Occasional structured in-person sessions may be used for onboarding, collaboration, mentoring, or team activities.
