Overview
Landela is an early-stage technology company building and operating digital products and services. We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer who can provide strong technical direction while remaining deeply involved in designing, building, and operating software.
You will work across frontend, backend, APIs, data, integrations, cloud infrastructure, deployment, reliability, and security. You will also help shape technical strategy, guide engineering execution, mentor engineers, contribute to hiring, and establish practical engineering standards as the team grows.
Why this role matters
As Landela builds its engineering team and products, we need consistent technical leadership across individual features and projects. Architecture, infrastructure, integrations, engineering quality, and operational practices should not depend on ad hoc decisions or require company leadership to be involved in every technical detail.
The Lead Software Engineer will provide that technical continuity. You will help the team make sound decisions, identify where deeper engineering investment is justified, avoid unnecessary complexity, and keep technical choices aligned with the products and business we are building.
Responsibilities
- Set and evolve technical direction across Landela's products, including application architecture, frontend and backend patterns, APIs, data models, integrations, cloud infrastructure, reliability, security, and engineering tooling.
- Remain hands-on in the codebase, designing and implementing production software across frontend and backend systems, particularly on complex, foundational, high-risk, or cross-cutting work.
- Work with company leadership and product stakeholders to translate business and product priorities into practical technical approaches, identify trade-offs, and determine where engineering investment will have the greatest impact.
- Lead the design of significant systems and technical initiatives, making pragmatic decisions around scope, scalability, maintainability, reliability, security, operational complexity, cost, and delivery speed.
- Guide cloud and DevOps practices including infrastructure, environments, CI/CD, deployment workflows, observability, secrets, configuration, operational tooling, and Infrastructure as Code.
- Establish practical engineering standards for code quality, testing, API design, documentation, security, observability, code review, and production readiness without introducing unnecessary process.
- Help break larger product and technical initiatives into clear engineering work, identify dependencies and risks, and provide enough direction for engineers to execute independently.
- Lead or support investigation of significant production incidents, performance issues, difficult technical problems, and recurring failures, ensuring lessons result in concrete improvements.
- Design and review integrations with external APIs, payment providers, identity systems, partners, and other third-party services, including failure handling, data consistency, monitoring, and recovery.
- Mentor Senior and Software Engineers through architecture discussions, code and design reviews, pairing, debugging, and direct technical feedback, helping them take broader ownership over time.
- Contribute actively to engineering hiring, including defining technical expectations, reviewing candidates, participating in interviews, and helping maintain an appropriate hiring bar.
- Support onboarding of new engineers and help them build enough product and system context to become productive without creating long-term dependency on the Lead Software Engineer.
- Maintain enough technical context across Landela's systems to identify cross-cutting risks and opportunities while deliberately distributing ownership across the engineering team.
Requirements
Experience & qualifications
- At least 7 years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial experience designing, building, deploying, and operating production applications.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- Demonstrated experience as a Lead Engineer, Technical Lead, Staff-level engineer, or similar senior technical owner for a team, product area, or significant system.
- Strong full-stack engineering experience, with meaningful production experience across modern frontend applications, backend services and APIs, relational databases, and integration-heavy systems.
- Demonstrated ability to make and communicate architecture decisions involving system boundaries, APIs, data flows, reliability, security, scalability, maintainability, operational complexity, and cost.
- Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure and production operations, including deployments, CI/CD, environments, observability, troubleshooting, and Infrastructure as Code or similar automation.
- Experience diagnosing complex production failures and improving systems based on operational evidence rather than only design assumptions.
- Experience leading technical work across multiple engineers, reviewing designs and code, mentoring experienced developers, and improving engineering quality without relying on formal management authority.
- Experience contributing to technical hiring, interviewing, onboarding, or defining engineering expectations is strongly preferred.
- Strong technical judgement and communication, including the ability to challenge weak approaches constructively, make decisions with incomplete information, and explain technical trade-offs to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Production experience with TypeScript, Node.js, React, Next.js, PostgreSQL, AWS, Terraform, AWS CDK, or comparable technologies.
- Experience with authentication and authorisation, payments, fintech, marketplaces, travel systems, e-commerce, or other integration-heavy and transaction-oriented products.
- Experience providing technical leadership in an early-stage company where engineers shared responsibility across product development, infrastructure, deployment, reliability, and production support.
What success looks like
- The engineering team has clear technical direction and can make day-to-day implementation decisions without depending on constant escalation.
- Frontend, backend, infrastructure, deployment, observability, security, and integration practices become more consistent across products.
- Architecture decisions are pragmatic and appropriate for Landela's current stage while avoiding obvious technical dead ends.
- The team can move from product problems to production software with clear ownership, sensible decomposition, and fewer avoidable delivery surprises.
- Production reliability and operational visibility improve, and recurring technical problems are addressed at their root rather than repeatedly patched.
- Senior and Software Engineers take increasingly broad technical ownership because system knowledge, standards, and decision-making are shared effectively.
- New engineers are hired against a clear technical bar, onboard effectively, and become productive without excessive dependence on one person.
- Technical debt and infrastructure work are prioritised according to product, operational, and business impact rather than either being ignored or becoming unlimited engineering projects.
- Company leadership can rely on the engineering team for sound technical recommendations without needing to participate in every architecture decision, deployment, or implementation detail.
What this role is
- The lead technical engineering role within a small product team
- Hands-on across frontend, backend, infrastructure, integrations, and production operations
- Responsible for technical direction and raising engineering quality across the wider team
- A role that combines deep individual contribution with mentoring, technical leadership, and engineering-team development
How this role works
- You will continue writing production code, but your impact should extend beyond the code you personally write.
- You will influence the full technical stack without becoming the sole owner of frontend, backend, DevOps, security, or infrastructure work.
- You will work closely with the Senior Full-Stack Engineer and other engineers, distributing system ownership and helping them make increasingly significant technical decisions.
- You will contribute to hiring, mentoring, onboarding, and engineering standards without necessarily owning formal performance management or other Engineering Manager responsibilities.
Working style
Landela operates with a small engineering team and minimal layers. We expect the Lead Software Engineer to stay close to implementation, communicate technical decisions clearly, challenge unnecessary complexity, and keep engineering standards proportionate to the company's stage.
This is a remote-first role anchored in Nairobi. Most engineering work can be done remotely, with occasional in-person team sessions or working meetings when useful. Strong asynchronous communication, dependable availability, and the ability to coordinate technical work across a distributed team are important.
How to apply
Use the application form below and describe a production system, product area, or technical initiative where you provided significant technical leadership. Explain what you personally owned, an important architecture or engineering trade-off you made, how you influenced or mentored other engineers, and a production or operational challenge you had to address.
